I am constantly drawn to the older homes that have such character as those in the Oakwood section of Raleigh. They have such grace and elegance and it is so challenging to bring them to the canvas.
The Heck-Andrews House was finished in 1870 and was one of the first houses in Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina to be constructed after the American Civil War. It is located at 309 North Blount Street, and created by G.S.H. Appleget for Mrs. Mattie Heck, the wife of Colonel Jonathan McGee Heck. It is on the National Register of Raleigh Historic Property. The house has a dramatic central tower capped with a convex mansard roof with a balustrade. The central part of the 2 1/2-story, Second Empire style frame dwelling is enclosed with a concave mansard roof with patterned slate.[2]

David Zimmerman was born in Washington, D.C.He began his studies at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1964. He continued on in his training with Bill Woodward at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. In order to receive a bacalaureate degree he transferred to George Washington University, where he studied Drawing and Printmaking with Frank Wright. He was granted a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts in 1970.After a brief period of training with Phillip Pearlstein in Massachusetts, he returned to George Washington University where he again studied with William Woodward and Arthur Hall Smith.
