Once you get the under painting established, the rest is down hill...HAH! (Or as my son would say NOT!) The heart of any realist painting is drawing, and once you get that right you're free to command the color scheme and paint execution. A good rule of thumb was always "simple composition complex color, complex composition simplified color scheme"
